Calculate your refund
What this solves
Icelandic VAT is called VSK (virðisaukaskattur). Standard rate 24%, reduced rate 11% for food, hotel, transport, books, and some other categories. Non-EU/EEA/UK visitors can claim the VAT back on purchases they take home. The refund is processed by 4 main companies: Global Blue (most common, 30% commission), Planet (cheaper), Premier Tax Free (mid), Refundit (app-based, cheapest).
There are three catches: (1) The minimum spend per receipt is ISK 6,000 (about $45) — below this you can't claim. (2) The processor takes a commission, so you don't get the full VAT back. (3) You need to apply at the airport before security — original receipts, goods in original packaging, passport.
How to read the result
The tool shows: gross VAT in the purchase (what you'd get back at 100%), commission taken by the processor, and the net amount you'll receive. It also shows the minimum threshold status — if your receipt is under ISK 6,000, the tool tells you to consolidate purchases.
Limitations
Refund percentages and thresholds are based on 2026 references. The exact commission varies by processor and total volume. Refundit gives the best rates but the app is more complex to set up. Global Blue has the most shop integrations. Check the small store signs at checkout.
The ISK 6,000 minimum is per receipt — if you spent ISK 5,500 at one shop and ISK 7,000 at another, you can't combine them. You need ISK 6,000+ on a single receipt.
FAQ
Do I need the receipt at the airport?
Yes — original receipt, with the tax-free form stamped at customs. Without it, no refund. Many shops email a digital version; print it before you fly.
Can I claim VAT on hotel + food?
Food at restaurants and hotel rooms are 11% VAT but typically not eligible for VAT refund (the service was consumed in Iceland, not exported). Exceptions vary. Hotel receipts are usually not tax-free-eligible.
When do I get the refund?
Card refunds: 5–10 days. Cash refund: available at the airport in ISK immediately. Cash typically gives a worse rate (the processor charges more for instant cash).
