Reykjavík Parking Zones: P1 to P4, plus the hidden free times

Reykjavík's central parking is metered 09:00–18:00 weekdays + 10:00–16:00 Saturdays. Sundays are free. After 18:00 weekdays free. There are 4 paid zones (P1 most expensive), several free P-zones in residential areas, and EV chargers in specific spots. This tool maps it to your schedule.

What this solves

Reykjavík's central parking is expensive and confusing for first-time visitors. The system uses 4 paid zones — P1 (red, central core, ISK 480/hour), P2 (orange, adjacent, ISK 350/hour), P3 (yellow, outer, ISK 200/hour), P4 (green, far, ISK 130/hour). On top of this, the entire system is free 18:00–09:00 weekdays, all day Saturday after 16:00, and all day Sunday.

There are also free residential areas further out, where you can park for hours without paying — but walk-in distance to central attractions is longer. The trick most tourists don't know: a residential P-zone 15 minutes' walk from your destination is often the best value, especially for longer stays.

Payment is via the Parka app (free, accepts foreign cards) or coin-only meters that give change. You cannot pay with a foreign card at the meter itself. Buy a Parka app before you arrive.

How to read the result

The plan box lists the cheapest option for your stay, the hours when payment is required, and the hidden free periods you can use. The map is schematic — the real zones are irregular and follow neighborhood boundaries, not a grid.

For example: a 3-hour weekday stop near Harpa in P1 = ISK 1,440. The same stop in P3 = ISK 600. A 6-hour Sunday stop anywhere = free.

Limitations

Parking zone boundaries change occasionally when the city adjusts meter strategy. The 2026 reference prices are typical mid-range — peak summer can be 30% higher in tourist zones. Always check the sign at the Pylon where you park. If the sign says "P2", you pay P2 rates regardless of what this tool predicted.

Residential free parking is reliable but harder to find between 17:00 and 19:00 weekdays when locals return home. Avoid relying on a "free spot 6 blocks away" if you have a dinner reservation in 20 minutes.

FAQ

What if I don't pay and the meter expires?

A parking inspector (Strætisvagnastýrumaður) will issue a ticket — about ISK 6,000–8,000 — visible on the windshield. You can pay it at any bank or via the Reykjavík city website with a discount for prompt payment. Ignore it at your own risk: rental car companies will charge your card on file + an admin fee (often ISK 15,000+).

Is it really free on Sundays?

Yes. Parking meters are off. This is one of the best kept secrets of visiting Reykjavík on a budget — a Sunday stroll is free.

What about EV charging spots?

There are several in central Reykjavík. Most are free to park at but charging has a per-kWh fee (around ISK 50–80/kWh). Apps like Plugshare show locations and live availability.
