Pick your trip, see what you actually need
What this solves
Iceland rental car counters sell insurance with names that look invented to confuse you. The same company may offer six different products that cover overlapping risks at different rates. We've seen counters present these as a stack ("just take all four, it's only 14,900 ISK/day extra"), which is rarely the right answer for the trip you're actually doing.
The four products most commonly offered in 2026 are: SCDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver — the standard damage excess reduction), Gravel Protection (GP — covers the windshield and paint chips from gravel), Underbody Protection (SAAP / Sand & Ash Protection by another name — covers damage to the underside from rocks, sand, ash), and Theft Protection (TP — usually redundant if you have any credit card abroad). On top of these, Sand & Ash is sometimes offered as a separate rider for an active volcanic period.
The trick is that almost every car in Iceland is now legally required to include at least basic third-party liability and a minimum CDW. The names "SCDW" and "GP" and "SAAP" are not standardised across the industry — they're product names. So you have to read the actual deductible reduction. This tool does that for you.
How to read the result
The tool lists each insurance product the desk will offer, marks it Buy, Optional, or Skip, and tells you what kind of damage it actually covers. It also estimates the daily cost (rates vary by company, but the proportions are stable) so you can budget.
Buy means we found the risk is real for your trip profile and the alternative (paying the deductible yourself, or your credit-card insurance excluding it) is materially worse. Optional means the risk exists but is low or your credit card likely covers it. Skip means the product is a marketing add-on — typically either redundant or covering something already in SCDW.
Limitations
This tool uses representative 2026 prices and coverage descriptions from Hertz Iceland, Blue Car Rental, Landsvirkjun-owned Höfði (sample), Lotus, and Ice Rental 4x4. Actual policy text varies by company and contract revision date. Read the rental contract before signing. We summarise, we do not replace the contract.
The "credit-card insurance covers it" line is conditional on: (1) you paid for the rental with that specific card, (2) the card's policy has not excluded Iceland (most Visa Signature/Mastercard World cards include it, but check), (3) you declined the rental company's CDW at the counter. If you accept the rental company's CDW, your card's collision coverage is typically void.
FAQ
Is SCDW mandatory in Iceland?
Basic CDW is included by law. SCDW (the upgraded version that brings the deductible down from ~350,000 ISK to 0 or near-0) is not mandatory but is heavily sold. If you have a credit card with CDW coverage, you can legally decline it.
What damage does SCDW NOT cover?
Generally: tire damage, windshield damage from gravel, underbody damage from rocks, sand & ash damage, water/hydro-lock, interior damage, damage from driving under the influence, and damage from driving on closed roads. So SCDW often covers the least of what actually happens in Iceland.
Do I need Gravel Protection if I stay on Route 1?
No. Gravel Protection covers chip damage to the windshield and paint from loose gravel on unpaved roads. Route 1 is fully paved. If your entire trip is paved roads, the gravel product is wasted money.
Is Sand & Ash the same as Underbody?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Some companies split them. Read the contract. Sand & Ash typically covers external ash damage to paint and windshield. Underbody covers the chassis underside hitting rocks — relevant for F-roads and rough tracks.
