Compare all options for your group
What this solves
Keflavík International (KEF) is 50 km west of Reykjavík. The trip takes 45–55 min by car via Route 41 + Route 1. Six ways to make it: Flybus (the airport coach), Airport Direct (a smaller competitor), a taxi, a private transfer booked via transfers.com, a rental car you keep for the whole trip, or hitchhiking (legal in Iceland on roads with a shoulder). Each option has its own price curve that changes with group size and time of day.
The tourist-industry default is "just take Flybus" — and for solo or couple travellers, it really is. But for 3–4 people with a 06:00 landing, a private taxi is sometimes cheaper than the bus. And for anyone renting a car anyway (the most common choice for a Ring Road trip), the marginal cost of the transfer leg is zero — but the car rental includes insurance value.
How to read the result
Each option lists the per-trip cost for your group + the trade-off (luggage handling, door-to-door, wait times, schedule). The Recommended option picks the cheapest that meets your door-to-door preference and doesn't make you wait more than 30 minutes after landing.
For 1–2 people during day time, Flybus wins on cost. For 3–4 people, Airport Direct or a private transfer is comparable. For 5+ or with lots of luggage, taxi or private transfer wins on logistics if you can afford it. If you're renting a car for the trip anyway, just pick it up at the airport — it removes the transfer leg entirely.
Limitations
Prices shown are reference 2026 rates from Flybus, Airport Direct, Hreyfill taxi, and transfers.com — they change seasonally and during Icelandair/WOW fare sales. The calculator assumes you book Flybus online (cheaper than at the desk). For night landings (after 23:00) the bus is often not running — leaving taxi as the only practical option unless you wait until morning.
Car rental pricing assumes a mid-size car in low/mid season. July–August prices can be 30–50% higher. Insurance is included at a basic tier.
FAQ
Is Flybus cheaper than taxi?
For solo or couples, yes (around 3,500–4,500 ISK one way vs ~25,000 ISK taxi). For 4 people with luggage, taxi becomes comparable. Flybus has scheduled departures every 30–60 min after a major landing; you may wait 30 min.
Can I pick up a rental car at Keflavík 24/7?
Yes. All major rental companies have 24-hour desks (some staffed, some keybox). If your flight lands at 02:00, you can usually pick up. Confirm with your specific rental company.
Is there Uber in Iceland?
No. The home grown Hreyfill/Borg taxi apps cover the same role. Lyft/uber have not entered the market.
