Predict access for your F-road trip
What this solves
The Icelandic road system has letters before the number: F-roads (mountain roads) require a 4×4, can include river crossings, are typically only open summer, and may close mid-day for weather. H-roads are mostly paved but rougher. Route 1 is paved all year. Knowing which class your route is changes everything about whether you can drive it.
The official road.is page is the only authoritative source for live status, but it only updates a few times a day and assumes you already know the F-road numbers. This tool gives you a planning estimate for the lead-up to your trip — so you can decide whether to plan for a highland detour at all, or stick to the south coast.
The "river-crossing danger" rating is based on Ferðafélag Íslands's classification system, which ranks Iceland river fords into 5 difficulty tiers. Anything tier 3+ should not be attempted in a rental SUV.
How to read the result
The verdict is one of: Open (likely accessible, but verify morning of), Marginal (officially open but high chance of closure by weather), Closed (route not maintained for your date), or Vehicle not allowed (you picked a 2wd for an F-road).
Confidence reflects how far into the season you are. Mid-July confidence is high; shoulder-season dates are inherently uncertain because one storm can flip status. The river-crossing rating uses the Ferðafélag system: 1 = dry feet, 2 = ankle-deep, calm, 3 = knee-deep, current, 4 = chest-deep, strong current, 5 = expert only.
Limitations
This is a planning estimate, not a live feed. Conditions can and do change by the hour. Always check road.is the morning you intend to drive any F-road. If road.is says closed, the road is closed — the rental contract explicitly forbids driving on closed roads and voids all insurance.
This tool does not know real-time river levels. A glacier-fed river can rise 50 cm in 6 hours during a heatwave. The difficulty tier shown is the seasonal baseline; on your actual day it may be a tier higher.
FAQ
Are F-roads really only for 4×4?
Yes. Icelandic law prohibits 2wd vehicles on F-roads. Rental contracts explicitly void all coverage if you take a 2wd on an F. Even a stock Dacia Duster is borderline on some river crossings.
When does the highland open in 2026?
Historically late June for low F-roads (Kjölur, Sprengisandur) and early July for higher ones (Askja). Closures begin mid-September. But every year varies — 2024 had snow patches into July. 2025 was unusually dry and many roads opened early.
What happens if I ignore a road closure?
Your rental insurance (including SCDW) is void. Search-and-rescue costs you personally. In serious scenarios (vehicle stuck in river, injured passenger) the bill routinely exceeds ISK 2,000,000. Don't do it.
