ATM Finder: avoid the Euronet skim and find the real no-fee option

Iceland has a few bank ATMs that are no-fee (for the Icelandic bank's customer), and many Euronet ATMs that charge ISK 800–1,500 per withdrawal. Plus: skimmers at tourist-area ATMs. This tool ranks every ATM type for your bank + card combo.

What this solves

Iceland's "official" ATM networks are Landsbankinn, Arion Banki, and Íslandsbanki — three of the major Icelandic banks. Withdrawals from these ATMs charge no fee from the Icelandic side. Your home bank may charge a foreign ATM fee (typically USD 3–5), and may also charge a foreign transaction fee (1–3%). Beyond these are Euronet ATMs and 7-Eleven ATMs — these are independent operators that charge ISK 800–1,500 per withdrawal plus a bad exchange rate.

The tourist skim trap: Euronet ATMs are everywhere in tourist areas (Reykjavík shopping street, near attractions). They look like real bank ATMs. They're not. Always check the ATM screen for the operator name before inserting your card.

How to read the result

Each ATM type shows: ATM fee (your bank's foreign ATM fee), exchange rate markup, and net cost for your withdrawal. The list is sorted by total cost. The warning box highlights the Euronet / 7-Eleven traps and explains how to spot them.

Limitations

Fee structures change. Card-specific deals (Monzo, Starling, Revolut have no foreign ATM fees up to limits; Wise has lower conversion fees) are summarised but not exhaustive. Verify with your card issuer.

Skimmers can be installed on any network. Cover the PIN pad with your hand. Check the card slot for anything loose. Report any ATM that "ate-retains" your card to your bank immediately.

FAQ

Should I use an ATM at all or just pay by card?

Iceland is nearly cashless — most shops, restaurants, taxis accept cards. You only need ISK cash for: rural petrol stations, smaller museums, hot dog stands (most accept card now), and tips. Withdraw ISK 20,000–50,000 once for the trip.

Is Revolut / Wise card OK in Iceland?

Yes — Revolut and Wise cards are widely accepted in Iceland. They have low foreign transaction fees and good exchange rates. ATM withdrawals have small fees (Revolut: free up to £200/month; Wise: ISK ~50 per withdrawal + 1.75% conversion).

Can I pay with USD or EUR?

Don't. Tourist-area shops will sometimes accept foreign currency at terrible rates (10–20% worse than the bank rate). Pay in ISK via card.
